Wokingham 1

Looking for Dr Who!

This building dates back to 1776 and was the Old Workhouse. We were amazed that these are the original timbers.  Obviously no problems with termites here!
Another original building - this beauty is a 16th century mansion, and is still lived in as a private residence.
Loved this place!  Why, you ask?  The bricked in windows were in response to the King's Window Tax, commonly referred to as "Daylight Robbery".
According to Wikipedia, the window tax was a property tax based on the number of windows in a house. It was a significant social, cultural, and architectural force in England, France, Ireland and Scotland during the 18th and 19th centuries.
Needless to say, it was not popular!  Maralyn, our host, says some new developments in this area mimic this look as a sales gimmick.
